Originally promoted as Vincent Price's 100th
film, this was an attempt to capitalize on his appearance in the
much superior Witchfinder General. A muddled script and
poor direction keep the film from taking off. There are several
things of note here, however. First, it offered great German actress
Elisabeth Bergner a fine part as Oona, the leader of the witch cult.
Secondly, AIP attempted to pass it off as another Edgar Allan Poe
adaptation, even to providing a brief quote from Poe's poem The
Bells at the beginning. Third, the British cut of the film
features animated credits by Monty Python member Terry Gilliam.
Fourth, the film was recut and rescored for American audiences. The
re-editing actually makes more sense of the plot, and the new music,
by AIP stalwart Les Baxter, provides a really cool jolt of energy,
especially during the climax and end credits.
